Church of Another Spirit
Brother Doug, June 6, 1999
Hello, I pray that we are helping you in your walk with Christ or if you do not know Him fully, with your search for Him. I tell ya, He is a great God, He is so wonderful and so willing to give us help, if we only ask. He will always take you back into full communion, even when you think you have trampled on Him greatly.
Stand with me in prayer,…. Jesus, You are so great and great to be praised! Help us know You better and lead us into Your Righteousness, for Your glory and for Your happiness. We are wretched in our actions but You have cleansed us, thank You, o great and wonderful God. Praise Your holy name and thank You for being with us and putting up with our childful ways. Be with us now as we learn of You and fill the speaker’s mouth with Your words and his heart with Your Spirit, so I can deliver this word for Your glory, amen.
Do you ever feel like life is just beating you down? You can not get ahead, no matter how hard you try or what you do. You feel like you are the biggest loser and embarrassment to the human race,….. and to top it off, the Heavens seem to be silent and God has disappeared? Anyone beside me? I know we all have, some more than others. You know, people think that they are the only ones with problems, but if truth be told, we all experience the same things and emotions. It is funny that we think we are the only ones to experience these things. You know where I figured this out?……… Prison, go figure. It is amazing where you learn things, but as the Proverbs say, it is a wise man that keeps his mouth shut and listens and learns.
So what do we do to get over this feeling? We can lie in our sorrows and just let them overwhelm us or we can take action. What action? Everyone has their opinions about this and I guess, they all have merit. But what is the correct one? For you that know horse training, John Lyons says that all techniques will work sometime, but we need to find the one that will work all or most of the time. It is the same with humans. But I have found that techniques used on horses, also work on humans. Ha ha. There is one that I use quite often. For the nervous people that are always uncertain, I start messing with them and spooking them more, finally they get sick of being so nervous and they get a sense of confidence and the fear goes away. If you have a horse, try this, take a bag and keep shaking it into the horse’s face. Eventually, it will get sick of being scared and it will not bother them anymore.
But let’s get serious, clergy, physchologists, friends and ma all have their get-well remedies. But there is one that is best. Worshipping God with all your heart and pouring your soul out to Him. I learned this some years back, it first started when I went to a revival meeting and I had a deep cut in my finger, when the meeting was over, the finger was completely healed over. Then I noticed that when I went to church, either sick or emotionally down, that when I was in the service, I felt better. And on those days that I didn’t feel like going to church and I did anyway, scratching and clawing the whole way, those were the days that I received the biggest blessings from God.
Now what does it mean to worship God? You can come up with your own definition but what I am talking about is, pouring all of your being into loving Him. Mostly in singing praise songs to Him but also in reading or hearing His word being expounded to you, serving others and in such a deep way that you can feel Him watching you. The Bible tells us to meditate on His word daily, in doing this, He is so ever present when all we do, we do in front of Him, with the knowledge that he is there and so near. We need to just pour everything we have into loving Him.
Let’s take a look at a story in scripture that will show us how to defeat depression and sickness in our lives by worshipping God. Turn to 2 Chronicles 20, ……… starting at verse 1, After this, the Moabites and Ammonites with some of the Meunites came to make war on Jehoshaphat. Some men came and told Jehoshaphat, "A vast army is coming against you from Edom, from the other side of the Sea. It is already in Hazazon Tamar" (that is, En Gedi). Alarmed, Jehoshaphat resolved to inquire of the LORD, and he proclaimed a fast for all Judah. The people of Judah came together to seek help from the LORD; indeed, they came from every town in Judah to seek him. Then Jehoshaphat stood up in the assembly of Judah and Jerusalem at the temple of the LORD in the front of the new courtyard and said: "O LORD, God of our fathers, are you not the God who is in heaven? You rule over all the kingdoms of the nations. Power and might are in your hand, and no one can withstand you. O our God, did you not drive out the inhabitants of this land before your people Israel and give it forever to the descendants of Abraham your friend? They have lived in it and have built in it a sanctuary for your Name, saying, `If calamity comes upon us, whether the sword of judgment, or plague or famine, we will stand in your presence before this temple that bears your Name and will cry out to you in our distress, and you will hear us and save us.' "But now here are men from Ammon, Moab and Mount Seir, whose territory you would not allow Israel to invade when they came from Egypt; so they turned away from them and did not destroy them. See how they are repaying us by coming to drive us out of the possession you gave us as an inheritance. O our God, will you not judge them? For we have no power to face this vast army that is attacking us. We do not know what to do, but our eyes are upon you." All the men of Judah, with their wives and children and little ones, stood there before the LORD. Then the Spirit of the LORD came upon Jahaziel son of Zechariah, the son of Benaiah, the son of Jeiel, the son of Mattaniah, a Levite and descendant of Asaph, as he stood in the assembly. He said: "Listen, King Jehoshaphat and all who live in Judah and Jerusalem! This is what the LORD says to you: `Do not be afraid or discouraged because of this vast army. For the battle is not yours, but God's. Tomorrow march down against them. They will be climbing up by the Pass of Ziz, and you will find them at the end of the gorge in the Desert of Jeruel. You will not have to fight this battle. Take up your positions; stand firm and see the deliverance the LORD will give you, O Judah and Jerusalem. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged. Go out to face them tomorrow, and the LORD will be with you.'" Jehoshaphat bowed with his face to the ground, and all the people of Judah and Jerusalem fell down in worship before the LORD. Then some Levites from the Kohathites and Korahites stood up and praised the LORD, the God of Israel, with very loud voice. Early in the morning they left for the Desert of Tekoa. As they set out, Jehoshaphat stood and said, "Listen to me, Judah and people of Jerusalem! Have faith in the LORD your God and you will be upheld; have faith in his prophets and you will be successful." After consulting the people, Jehoshaphat appointed men to sing to the LORD and to praise him for the splendor of his holiness as they went out at the head of the army, saying: "Give thanks to the LORD, for his love endures forever." NIV.
Now do you see what happened? Three armies where coming against Judah, very perilous thing, but Jehoshaphat, the man of God he was, immediately went to his knees in prayer to God. He was in big trouble and the very being of his country was at stake. Carefully examine his prayer, I would advice you to do the same type of prayer when life seems to be against you. He evaluated the situation, then he poured His heart out to God, reminded God of promises that He had made and victories that God had done for His people, …then he stood back and trusted that God would answer him. This is exactly what we need to do, when life is overwhelming us and God will answer us just the same as He did King Jehoshaphat.
But the point I want to get across is, look at the last verses. If it would have been me, I probably would of starting setting up my defenses and started making strategies, checking supplies and so forth. But Jehoshaphat went to prayer and consulted his God. The answer came through the prophet that the victory was already won by the Lord. And there was much worshipping of God on their knees in prayer and then the Levites stood up and started singing hymns or whatever to God.
Now here was the strategy that Jehoshaphat used to win the victory, the great war mastermind sent the choir out front to enter the battle. Huh? Yes! He worshipped God and came with expectation that God would deliver them. Now, let’s see what happened, we will continue reading verse 22..., As they began to sing and praise, the LORD set ambushes against the men of Ammon and Moab and Mount Seir who were invading Judah, and they were defeated. The men of Ammon and Moab rose up against the men from Mount Seir to destroy and annihilate them. After they finished slaughtering the men from Seir, they helped to destroy one another. When the men of Judah came to the place that overlooks the desert and looked toward the vast army, they saw only dead bodies lying on the ground; no one had escaped. So Jehoshaphat and his men went to carry off their plunder, and they found among them a great amount of equipment and clothing and also articles of value--more than they could take away. There was so much plunder that it took three days to collect it. On the fourth day they assembled in the Valley of Beracah, where they praised the LORD. This is why it is called the Valley of Beracah to this day. Then, led by Jehoshaphat, all the men of Judah and Jerusalem returned joyfully to Jerusalem, for the LORD had given them cause to rejoice over their enemies. They entered Jerusalem and went to the temple of the LORD with harps and lutes and trumpets. The fear of God came upon all the kingdoms of the countries when they heard how the LORD had fought against the enemies of Israel. And the kingdom of Jehoshaphat was at peace, for his God had given him rest on every side.
Did you catch that? When they started to sing and praise God, He set up ambushes for the enemies of Judah and the armies where defeated, without one single soldier entering the battlefield. God will do the same thing for us. When the enemy comes against us, in the guise of depression, financial unrest, angry people, illness, bad drivers, whatever, if we would only worship God, He would set the ambushes against those enemies and we would see victory. He wants to fight our battles for us because He loves us so; He doesn’t want to see us hurt and defeated because we are His children. Will you trust Him with your battles and praise Him? I tell you, you will see victory take place and you will not of done a thing to defeat it but sing unto the Lord with all your heart in love to Him.
Now here is where the disclaimer comes, "What if I have a person or spouse that is being mean to me all the time", you ask. You may not see the judgment fall on that person and they might not die but your innermost being will be at peace and you will be able to handle the situation, with the peace of the Lord and you will be able to love that person. And in so doing, their attitude will change towards you. I have seen this happen in my own experiences and it shocks me all the time when someone that is vehemently against what I stand for, all of a sudden starts being nice to me or even gives me an open invitation to visit their house at anytime.
What the Lord has told me in these times, is that, I need to keep or get myself right and He will take care of the person. This is true, too, because we will not be able to love them or win them to Jesus if we hold animosity against them and in doing this, we have lost the battle. Ultimately, we also stand in the way of that person entering into the love of God because we are His ambassadors and people watch us to see what Jesus is like.
The praising of God did not stop after the victory was over, after they collected all the spoils, they went back to the Temple still singing unto God. With instruments, this time and they lived in peace and the fear of Lord kept the enemies away. In life's problems, if we could only praise God continually, those problems would stay away; now, I am primarily speaking of emotional problems. We will always have things that we face that are not in our control. But we can keep at bay, those things that want to overrun us, like depression, anger, jealousy and so on and so on.
So here is my advice to you, I do this myself and I am a testimony that it works, get tapes or CDs of worship music, listen to them until you know the words pretty well,……. then start singing along with them. Praise God with all your voice and belt it out! It really doesn’t matter who it is or what type of music, just make sure it is music that really worships God. I myself prefer Keith Green for praise, and when I need to mix in a little victory music with my worship, I like Charlie Daniels two gospel albums, "The Door" and "Steel Witness". And whenever you feel like you are losing that loving feeling with Jesus, take out the tapes and just start praising Him. What the musical artist is playing, take for your own and just pour your heart out to Him. It truly works.
Let’s end in prayer, …… Jesus, you are great to be praised. You have been and are the Victor, in all battles, both physical and spiritual. Forgive us when we do not praise You when we really should. When we do this, we are letting our own lives get in the way and we lose focus on You. Holy Spirit of God, please put in us a spirit of worship to our King and Saviour. Help us worship Him in a way that would be pleasing to Him and teach us how to love Him better. Father in Heaven, thank you for being You and letting us have the right to be called sons of the Living God. Praise you, God in Heaven and bless you with all of our hearts. You are so wonderful and we love you. Thank you for defeating our enemies and being our Champion. Praise You! PRAISE YOU, O KING AND FATHER!! …… Jesus, please hear our prayers and set those ambushes up so we may find the victory in Your name, thank You, amen and amen.
See you all next week or sooner, know that He loves you and wants to be there for you, He awaits your plea. Come to the altar and start pouring your heart out to Him in prayer and praise.
